Abstract
Musical theater, as a comprehensive performance art that integrates various forms of art such as drama, music, and dance, has undergone a transformation from introduction to localization since its introduction to China in the 20th century, and has gradually become an important component of higher education in China. This study reviews the development history, educational status, problems and challenges faced by musicals in higher education in China, and proposes corresponding innovation and development strategies. Research has shown that with the rise of musicals in China, more and more higher education institutions are establishing majors or courses related to musicals, aiming to cultivate musicals talents with professional competence and innovative abilities. These courses cover multiple directions such as musical performance, screenwriting, and directing, emphasizing the combination of theory and practice, and enhancing students professional competence and practical abilities through diverse teaching methods. However, musical education also faces some problems and challenges in its development process, such as unclear educational concepts and training objectives, limitations in teaching methods and tools, and unclear prospects for subject development and employment. In response to these issues, this study proposes strategies such as educational and teaching innovation, discipline construction and development, industry-university research cooperation and practice, aiming to improve the quality and effectiveness of musical education, promote the close connection and interactive development between musical education and industry. At the same time, this study also compared and analyzed the musical education models at home and abroad, pointing out the advantages of foreign musical education in practical teaching, school enterprise cooperation, etc., providing useful reference for the reform and innovation of domestic musical education.
